Cristo Rey 75th anniversary

Santa Fe New Mexican

The retablo was carved in 1760 by unknown artisans in the employ of the Governor Franciso Antonio Mari del Valle, and was to be used in the military chapel being erected in the Santa Fe plaza. Governor Marin del Valle paid all cost for the chapel, the retablo, all furniture, and even the fixtures and vestments to be used in the chapel.  He may have built it to commemorate the visit, in 1760, of Bishop Tamaron, of Durango Mexico, or to serve as a fitting chapel for the Cofradia SS Señora de la Luz (confraternity of Our Lady of Light), which Governor Marin del Valle founded at the time of the Bishop's visit.
